Stop Practicing So Long! (How To Practice)

Stop Practicing So Long! Or…How Not to Turn Your Practice Sessions into Marathons

Did you know? According to a study at the XYZ University, most students believe that practicing longer will make them better. Spoiler alert: It doesn’t!

Music Practicing too long

The Myth of the Long Practice Session

Hey there, superstar-in-the-making! I’ve heard a little rumor about you. Apparently, you think sitting at the piano for hours on end one of times every two weeks will make you the next Beethoven. Well, here’s a reality check: It won’t. Surprised? Don’t be. Here’s why.

Quality Over Quantity

Just like you wouldn’t eat all your meals for the week in one sitting (seriously, imagine the heartburn!), practicing for hours sporadically isn’t going to do you any favors. Daily practice, even if it’s short, helps reinforce your learning and keeps your skills sharp. Remember, it’s not about how long you practice, but how you practice.

Fun Fact: Your brain can only handle so much information at once. That’s why cramming for tests never works!

Consistency is Key

Imagine going to the gym once every two weeks and trying to bench press 200 pounds. Not only will you probably not move that weight, but you might also pull something! Muscles, whet

her they’re in your arms or fingers, need consistent work to grow and strengthen.

Habits > Marathons

If you’re new to the world of music, or just new to the idea of daily practice, start with baby steps. Ten minutes a day. That’s it. Once that feels like a breeze, increase your time. The point is to form a habit. Before you know it, you’ll be practicing more without even realizing it!

Sarcasm Alert: If you still think one marathon session a week is enough, I’ve got a bridge to sell you!

Wrapping it Up

So, the next time you think about skipping your daily practice in favor of a two-hour session on the weekend, remember this: consistent, short practices are the secret sauce to becoming a musical genius. And if you need more tips on how to practice, book a lesson with me and I’ll answer all your questions. Or, for a deep dive into the science of practice, here’s an outbound link to a trusted music education site.

Remember, consistency is the secret ingredient in the recipe for success! So, get to that piano and start practicing (but not for too long, okay?).

Building an Iso Room for Pitch Michael Music Studio: A DIY Journey

Building an Iso Room for Pitch Michael Music Studio: A DIY Journey

When I decided to set up my first storefront lesson studio, I knew I had a challenge ahead of me. Nestled in a more compact space and being mindful of the surrounding neighbors, it became evident that creating an iso room for Pitch Michael Music Studio was essential. For those unfamiliar, an iso (isolation) room is designed to prevent the transfer of sound. Perfect for lessons and recording without disturbances!

Now, here’s the twist: I’m no handyman. The thought of building something, especially something as intricate as an iso room, was daunting. But with determination and a can-do attitude, I embarked on this DIY journey. With each nail hammered and every soundproof panel installed, my confidence grew. The end result? A room I built mostly by myself, which became a testament to what one can achieve with a bit of grit and perseverance.

The iso room at Pitch Michael Music Studio isn’t just any room. It’s where the magic happens. From voice to guitar and piano lessons, to trumpet and trombone sessions with Carl, our expert instructor, this space has seen it all. And not just for teaching – it’s also a recording haven. I’ve had the privilege to record not just myself but talented artists from LA and many of our budding students.

But it’s not all work and no play. Right outside the iso room, there’s a TV and a comfy couch. It’s a spot for kids to chill out, play some Nintendo while waiting for their lessons. Sometimes, you might even catch me indulging in a game or two!

In conclusion, the iso room at Pitch Michael Music Studio stands as a symbol of innovation and adaptability. Whether you’re here for lessons, recording, or just a round of Nintendo, know that a lot of love and effort went into creating this special space. If you’re ever in need of a lesson or recording studio, look no further. Our doors (and iso room) are always open

Why Open a Music Studio in San Elijo/San Marcos?

There was a need in the San Elijo and San Marcos community and Pitch was ready! Pitch Michael has been teaching music for well over a decade! He started teaching by offering home music lessons. Soon after he began renting space at local music studios, like Nick Rail Music and La Jolla Music. Once 2020 hit, Pitch moved most lessons online and taught out of his own home while moving to San Elijo/San Marcos area. New to San Elijo/San Marcos area, he found a need that wasn’t filled. So, he decided to open a storefront music lesson and recording studio to serve the community. 3 schools in the area and not one storefront music studio; San Elijo Middle, San Elijo Elementary, and Double Peak School!

Music Lessons & Recording Studio?

Yes! Pitch has a degree in Contemporary Writing and Production. He doesn’t do recitals with students, but instead nurtures the creative and performer! Building in a recording studio gives his students an outlet to be creative! With music lessons we teach the student about the instrument and how to play. With the recording studio we teach them how to perform and create! In today’s tech world a music lesson and recording studio is the perfect pairing! Also, having a dedicated music lesson studio allows Pitch to bring on more teachers and serve more students.

What to do when Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp are all down?

Facebook Down

Yes, we are starting out the week with a global shutdown, but not the kind of shutdown everyone has been anticipating.  Today users around the world are experiencing outages on Facebook and related social media networks including Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp.  You may have thought it was an internet connection problem like I first did until I searched online and found some answers.  Even Facebook internal communication platforms are down!

WHAT CAUSED IT?  From what I read, the outage was caused by a DNS (domain name server) fail.  I guess this is the naming structure that forms the web’s infrastructure!  Not the greatest for facebook as their stock has dropped 5.5% since open!  I’m sure they will get it all figured out soon…

THOUGHTS… At first this may feel like an inconvenience but let’s change that posture and think of this as a gift!  Fight the urge to run to another social media outlet to like Twitter, Tiktok, or Snapchat to get your daily dose of social media.  Instead take this time to unplug and work on a fun skill!  I’d like to recommend taking this blessed time to learn music or take this time to practice your instrument of choice!  If you have already started your musical journey maybe you could learn a new piece, work on a new solo/scale, write a song!  If you are completely new to music and/or just need some guidance set up a music lesson today with a teacher in your area like me!  I personally have openings and availability throughout the week including today!  So if you reach out to me, you can start playing music before the day is over.

Guitar Buying Guide (updated 2021)

Guitar Basic Info

Types of Guitars:

The most common types of guitars are classical guitars, steel-string acoustic guitars, and electric guitars.

Classical Guitars

By the name alone one can assume classical guitars are used in ‘classical music’, though they are also heard in many other genres as well.  These guitars have a wider neck than their acoustic guitar relative and use nylon strings instead of metal.  Classical guitars are also referred to as Nylon String Guitar or Spanish Guitar. Though classical guitars are mainly heard in classical and spanish music some pop artists such as Jason Mraz have incorporated classical guitars in much of their music.

Steel String Guitars

These types of guitars are the most commonly played acoustic guitar, they can be heard densely in country music, and acoustic rock music.  They are known for there metallic sound which is heard in a lot of popular music today.

Click Here to see a comprehensive list of other types of guitars

Electric Guitars

Want to rock?  This is the guitar for you!  Similar to the steel string acoustic guitars,  electric guitar also use all metal strings, but because they not hollow they do not project sound far and sound best when plugged into a guitar amp.

Buying Guide

What Guitar to buy for a beginner?

If you are new to playing guitar I would recommend purchasing an acoustic guitar and specifically a classical guitar instead of the steel string guitar because the strings are much easier on the fingers due to the fact that the strings are made of nylon instead of metal.

Yamaha C40II - Classical Guitar ($149.99)

This is a great starter Classical Guitar and yamaha is  reliable brand. If you are looking for a guitar for a smaller kid yamaha makes a similar classical in 3/4 size!

Yamah FD01S - Steel String Guitar (149.99)

This is a good price for a steel string acoustic guitar with solid spruce top, which will only sound better with age.  If you are wanting/needing a guitar with a pickup, for a little over $300 you can buy the Yamaha FSX800C or Yamaha FGX800C.

Squier Strat by Fender - Electric Guitar ($209)
